FOREVERFAMILY PARTNERS WITH SOUTHWEST DEKALB HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ON SERVICEWORKS PROJECTS FOR VETERANS DAY
Students spotlight the warriors in our everyday lives.
Atlanta, GA, November 8, 2016 – In observation of Veterans Day, students from the Southwest DeKalb High School Jr. ROTC in collaboration with Foreverfamily, a 29 year old youth development organization, are using a college and career readiness program called ServiceWorks to develop projects to honor veterans. The variety of projects include interviewing veterans who work on the Southwest DeKalb campus to develop a ‘Wall of Honor’ that highlights their years of service, writing letters of appreciation to the active duty troops and their families, as well as working with area dentists to send uneaten Halloween candy to troops overseas.
ServiceWorks, a joint partnership between AmeriCorps, the Citi Foundation’s Pathways to Progress and Points of Light, works with local nonprofits to equip young adults ages 16-24, with training in leadership and workplace skills through the completion of volunteer service projects that are a part of the program’s graduation requirements.
Sandra Barnhill, founder and president of Foreverfamily said, “Coming from a military family myself, I am excited to see the creativity and execution of the students on these projects in honor of Veterans Day.” Dr. Kenyatta Arnette, chair of the Career and Technology Department agrees, “This partnership could not have come at a better time! Southwest DeKalb is following through on our commitment to “students first” with this partnership with Foreverfamily. Jr.ROTC is the first of six organizations in the Department that will engage in ServiceWorks as a means of giving back to the community.”
Southwest DeKalb High School was chartered in 1928. It houses only 1 of only 3 High Achiever Magnet Programs. The school has been recognized as a national leader in helping students of color succeed on Advanced Placement exams
