What We Do: For Our Families

Family Visitation

Most children in Atlanta and Louisville with an incarcerated parent need to travel 100 miles or more to see them. Not surprisingly, this is the primary reason children don’t get to see their incarcerated parents with any regularity. We address this by providing regularly scheduled transportation for kids in Atlanta to see their mothers and special visitation days in Louisville so families can bring children to a community-based facility to connect with their dads. These trips often involve two-hour or more drives each way and four or more hours at the prison or transitional centers.

Special Programming in Louisville for Incarcerated Fathers

While Foreverfamily has helped children for over twenty-three years, what’s different in our Louisville, Kentucky affiliate is that we’re bringing our services right into the heart of the community. We work inside several men’s transitional centers owned by Dismas Charities, Inc. in Louisville, Kentucky where they are headquartered. By partnering with Dismas Charities, we can offer even more comprehensive family support services including:

  • A ten week class designed to help fathers learn to co-parent with their children’s mother and prepare them for interacting with their children during 5 hour family visits;
  • Informational materials that educate the fathers on the special challenges of parenting from prison;
  • Respite care for the custodial parents and/or caregivers while the children are interacting with dad during family visits.
